Federation Square

Flinders St, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

Specification

  • 50 exit signs were required for the portable walls in the National Gallery of Victoria.
  • The signs were to be both durable, to cope with the high volume of people moving through the building and flexible to change.
  • The signs needed to have sufficient light levels throughout the day, ensuring they were excited in case of emergency.

Design Characteristics

As the walls were to be reconfigured regularly for the ever changing nature of the gallery, a system of signage was to be developed which would enable for signs to be moved, with the walls, when required.

System materials

Lumink, suited to being charged quickly under ambient light, was screen printed onto a Colourbond panel which was then adhered onto the walls.

Result achieved

As a powered sign, used for the fixed walls, was unable to be installed on the portable walls due to the need for wiring, WAYOUT was able to use its system to replace the powered signs with luminous technology which could not be distinguished from the complimentary product.  The luminous signs removed the need for unsightly wiring and in the process developed an entirely flexible evacuation system, not to mention the savings on power and ongoing maintenance.
